I'm sure you've seen the commercials with the old woman saying "Help, I've fallen and I.... yada yada yada." Senior citizens, and those who wanted an extra level of protection, have relied on personal emergency response systems (PERS) for years. Intially these systems were great, they allowed people to live in their homes longer. But the older PERS worked by using home phone lines, which are becoming rare to find and restricted the use of the devices to a small radius, generally in the home.

This is why we are so excited to unveil the SelectCompanion. This small device is made to be worn as a watch or pendant, and operates using cellular signals and GPS tracking. You can go to the mall, the beach, or for a walk in the woods, and as long as you have the slightest cell signal, your Companion will be there if you run into trouble. Smaller Budgets Forcing Police Forces To Make Tough Decisions

I ran across this article today in the Scranton Times-Tribune regarding the lack of funding that many police forces are facing. Times are tough, and tough decisions have to be made. In order to maximize on the dollars available to them, the author writes that many police forces are shying away from hiring full-time officers, relying instead on part-timers. Not only is the pay lower, but municipalities don't have to pay for benefits... which can add up to significant savings. The downside is that those part-time officers in many cases have to work for multiple police forces to make a livable wage. And as the article points out, that can lead to an increase in overworked, burnt-out officers.

As citizens, we've come to rely on police officers in our times of need. Now, when many are under pressure to perform at ever increasing levels with decreasing funds, we can all do our small part to lessen their burden. Here are a few tips that can help to decrease common crime, freeing up our men and women in blue to protect us against greater threats.

Start a neighborhood watch, or participate in one already established. An engaged neighborhood is also a crooks worst nightmare.

Take a look at your home, and make changes to the landscape if needed. Try to eliminate places where crooks can hide, such as unlit areas or places with heavy vegetation.

Get a security system, and encourage your neighbors to do the same. Crooks know that it is risky to attempt to break into protected homes. In fact, homes without security systems are 3 times more likely to get broken into!

Consider adding video capabilities to your security system. An increasing number of police stations now give preferential treatment to video verification systems.

And finally, if you get the chance, thank a police officer. A few simple words could go a long way in making that officer a little less stressed.

The New Online Face Of Select Security

You may have noticed a change in the online look of Select Security. Our new website was launched today, and has gotten many positive comments. A number of our customers (and future customers, too!) have come to rely on our website for the latest information about Select Security, and we wanted to make something that reflected that. We treat our customers like they are a part of our family, and want to be able to share our latest news with all of you. So, we made a website that offers plenty of information, yet was easy to navigate.

In the past year we've grown so much that we jumped 9 spots UP the list, to become thee 74th largest security company in America.

As a member company of the Electronic Security Association (ESA), we often get to read the interesting security related stories that they publish. This morning we found a really enlightening one about the benefits of owning a home security system. It turns out that not only do they cut crime by 60%, but they can also save you $$ when it comes to your homeowners insurance. In many cases, the insurance company will knock off up to 20% of your annual premium. So not only will your system keep you safe, but will also help to pay for iteself... not a bad deal. Fire Safety

Today we were browsing the local news websites, and noticed that the number one listing for "hot topics" on WGAL-TV's page is fire safety. Here at Select Security we take all forms of safety seriously, not only is it our business but Patrick Egan, our founder and President, is a long-time volunteer firefighter in the community as well as being EMT certified. I guess you could say that safety is in our blood.

Back to the topic at hand... as we come into the summer months you will probably be hearing a lot about being safe with fireworks and bonfires outside. We encourage everyone to be safe when it comes to those activities, but would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone about the importance of year-round fire prevention inside the home. 

The easiest thing you can do is to make sure you have smoke detectors properly installed and working at all times. Check the batteries often, and change them before they run out of juice. A majority of all fire deaths happen in homes where smoke detectors aren't present or working. If your smoke detector goes off every time you step into the kitchen, don't take out the battery. Check with an expert, it could just be located in the wrong place. 

If you live with children, make sure they are aware how dangerous fire can be. Take the time to make a family plan, complete with escape plans and decide on a place to meet outside the home in the event of a fire. Fire extinguishers are also a good idea, but make sure they are also tested regularly.
